The Colosseum

First line of order: Coliseum versus Colosseum

Coliseum - a large sports stadium or building designed like the Colosseum for entertainment.
Colosseum -  an amphitheater built in Rome in the first century A.D.

Dubbed as the Roman empire's most impressive building, standing in front of this ancient structure, I'd have to say, in present-day it is still quite the impressive building. The sheer size of this structure is jaw-dropping and the thought that warriors fought each other, as well as fierce animals, to the death is a bit eerie. I am humbled that I may officially state that I have taken the same steps as the Roman royalties, the Roman citizens, the Roman gladiators, the Roman conquests.

Walking up from the city, this massive structure is difficult to miss. But the archway that stands just to the left of the Colosseum and just to the right of Palatine Hill, is just as impossible to miss. The Arch of Constantine may not get the attention it deserves sitting in such close proximity to the Romans greatest architectural feat. Here's a bit of background (from Wikipedia): "... erected to commemorate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312. Dedicated in 315, it is the latest of the existing triumphal arches in Rome, from which it differs by spolia, the extensive re-use of parts of earlier buildings." The first photo shown below pays a tribute to the beauty!

Once headed to the Colosseum, the mass of people wandering outside, waiting in line and touring inside was completely overwhelming. Sadly, it took away some of the "magic" that history produces when standing in front of a modern-day citizen. I luckily bought a Rome Pass (highly recommended and runs about 20 euros) and surpassed the 300+ person line, getting in for free, which automatically put a smile on my face. At times, I luckily found myself wandering the oval alone, camera in hand, enjoying my one chance to reflect on the history I walked on.

That night, traveling by cab to the nearby nightlife spots with newly made friends, I passed the Coliseum, completely lit up, showing off it's glory. As I passed and the structure became a blur, I thought to myself (not all too deeply), "This is pretty frickin' cool."

Home Sweet Home

Dean Martin puts it best...
"When the world seems to shine, like you've had too much wine... that's amore."

The thirty-five days abroad have come to the end sadly. Camera memory cards and inspiration banks are full; I guess that goes for my carb-filled belly as well. Italy was absolutely spectacular. Above and beyond expectations. Each city had its own vibe, style, and personality. So much so it would be difficult to pick a favorite. I know initially the plan was to travel around northern Italy for the entire thirty-five days... but, the travel bug scooted me through three other countries as well. What would the travel-experience be without a few "on the whim" moments? Italy, France, Switzerland and Georgia had the chance to offer their best in food, fashion, culture, language... and everything in between. And boy, oh boy, did these countries ever show up to the challenge. I am so excited to share everything, so while I edit and recap memories, I want to leave you with one photo per destination. So happy to be back, I've missed you all!

Enjoy and keep checking back for updates!
